Curious Friday

Kitties, I would like to have your thoughts on this next matter.

You already know that Mommy took me to the v-e-t office this week. You know I had to have my bloods stolen (they got an A+!!) and you know that while I was there, I got those whoopty- doo high powered flea meds. The ones that do ear mites (no, I don't have those or fleas) and they prevent heart worms. I think that taking flea meds before you need them is a bad idea and mommy said she agreed and won't give them to me any more since I only have a problem if someone brings fleas into my home.

I told Mommy to tell all of you kitties that I was feeling mighty bad when I came home and this time, I stayed feeling bad for three days. I hollered a lot in the night time from 2 AM on. Mommy didn't get hardly any unbroken sleep.

Mommy told my doctor and he had her come to the office and he gave her some Feliway to use that is in a plug-into the wall diffuser. It's supposed to help an anxious little one feel better and less anxious.

TThat is my question to all of my friends. Has your mom and dad used Feliway for you? DID IT HELP with your feeling of anxiety?

Mom said NO more flea meds, on accounta she thinks that may be what caused my bad reaction.

I think I am finally on the upswing though. I allowed mommy to love on me last night and I slept with her in our bed again. But I did speak out at 5am. better than 2am she said.

What do you, my furriends say?

The mom used Feliway with Annie, for a couple of months, when Nicki was first adopted. Didn't make one whit of difference to Annie's nastiness and crabbiness. LOL. So it helps some, doesn't help others. Hopefully it helps you.

Also, you can get those calming collars, pheromone collars that last a month. They sell for about $15CAN, so less US, we imagine. A number of kitties around the CB have used them with success.

We've never had the flea meds that also do heartworm -- we've just the liquid for fleas. The mom will put it on only one or twice during the spring to fall flea season, since it IS poison. Knock on wood, we've never had fleas and hope we never do!

Dear, sweet Admiral, we are so sad that you have been having these problems. We hope that you will soon be your usual self again and that all fleas will stay away from you forever.

Mama has never used Feliway, so unfortunately we can't give you any input.

We do know that we love ya very much, beautiful Admiral.

Poor Admiral! I feel so bad for you (and your Momma because she loves you so much and is so worried that she can't sleep).

I have never heard of (or used) Feliway so I am going to subscribe to the comments so that I may learn about it too!!

(((((hugs)))))

Mommy said to mention that I am keeping mommy awake. She would love to sleep but with me honking and snorting so much, I keep waking her up. I feel sorry for her. I wish I would st\op meowing to much in the night time.

Poor Admiral! Our human has never tried Feliway but we do get our Frontline Spot on regularly as a precautionary measure against those bad critters.

Are you still getting those allergy shots still, Admiral? Tommy is off his antibiotics and is responding very well with topical cream of low steroid percentage. Our human and our vet discussed and will only use steroid injections as a last resort.

I've read up about Feliway but have never had to try it. It's pretty hard to find here and I have only seen it at one pet shop and it doesn't look very appealing (very old looking box) and is very pricey.

When Cosmo and Ling were fighting, I was told to try Bach's Rescue Remedy as it is also supposed to calm them down. But they had stopped fighting by then so I didn't get a bottle.

I hope you feel better soon and stop meowing at 5am. :)

We do use Feliway and like Kea says it helps some and not others. We too have heard the calming collars work well but have not used one. None of us will wear them. Sounds like you just don't feel well and want all the world to know it. When you feel better you will be quieter I bet. One vet did have us use a topical flea stuff with ear mite and heartworm but it left bald spots on the cats who used it and then Mom read about it and lots of folks had their cats get sick from them so no more.

oh no, poor you. We haven't used Feliway but know someone who has when they had to move and it worked well for them. Our Mrs H has never pur flea stuff on us because we are white with our pink skin showing through, that she can locate any fleas if they turn up, she checks us a lot. You can't be feeling well if you cry a lot, so sorry to hear that and hope you feel better VERY soon. Thanks for all your lovely comments when you visit. Love Darcy and Bingley xx

I am positive it was the flea meds that made her soooo sick. Very dangerous indeed and takes a good 4 days to get out of her system. Thank goodness she is getting better. I was really worried, Carole, seriously. Now as to Feliway, yeah I tried that, and it didn't do a darn thing. Nothing, nada. If you plug it in to try it, don't worry, it won't make her sick. It's something like aroma therapy is for humans. I found that extra lovin' and extra treats and extra everything did the trick. I think Miss Kitt is finally out of the woods now, TG
Give her LOTS of smooches from me, ok?
Sorry I wrote this to you and not to her, but this was better discussed with you so as not to make her more afraid, poor darlin'
XOXOXO

We have to agree with Wild cat woods cats in that you just don't feel well and it could be from the flea stuff they put on you. Did they give you shots too?? If so, it could be a reaction from the shots. We have had cats have reactions from shots. We just hope you feel better really soon. WE have never used the Feliway, so can't help you there. Feel better Admiral Hestorb

We have 3 Feliway diffusers here...they seem to work pretty good with all of us!

Mommy has used the Feliway plug-ins before, she thinks it MIGHT work if it (and you!) were in one room. She's had mixed success with it. The calming collar did work for Maui and Sweet Pea, but they have a horrendous fake floral smell.
Your Mom might want to try some Feliway spray in the rooms where you sing at night. Our Mommy spritzes it by our beds and where we sometimes whizz by the front door, and it DOES work, at least for us.

JennyD said...

And I think it's worth the try of the Feliway :)]
Just because it didn't work for my cats doesn't mean it won't for you. I think my fur balls just learned the trick of how to "work" me for extras. Shoot, they were probably in reality laid back and saying, "Hey Mannnnnnn, this is good stuff. See if you can make our human think we need some snackies!" Lol. XOXOXO

I am happy you are feeling better Admiral. That Woman used the Feliway plug in thingy on me so I wouldn't beat up Scraps, did it work HELLS NO! It would take more than some 'warm fuzzy nose therapy' to get me to stop going after Scraps. After reading Katnip Lounge suggestion about the Feliway spray now That Woman wants the keyboard back to look it up on amazon.

I have read some otherkitties say the calming collars work but honestly? Collars? What are we, DOGS? I think NOT! Everytime That Woman has purchased collars (the safteee kind that snap off if they get caught on something so they don't strangle you!) with various dangly things on them & you know what I have to say to THAT? Talk to The Tail Woman! NOT gonna happen. I figured out right off how to remove them and no matter how hard she tries; I always manage to 'lose' them?? heeheeh*snicker*

Loves to you my sistah! Hope the allergies lighten up so you two can catch up on yer ZZZzzzz's.

Our mum has used Feliway - not with us but with kitties who came before - say if she has workmen in who were making banging noises and shouting to each other, also when they had to go into a cattery when she went on holiday or just sressful times if one went to the vets for a procedure and came home smelling of vetty smells!! She said she thought they helped but supposed it depended on the temperament of the kitties.

Sweet Admiral, we are happy you are on the upswing. Hopefully you will feel 100% normal once all those crazy flea meds are out of your system.

We use Feliway plug-ins at the shelter, and it does seem to help some of the kitties who are having trouble adjusting. :)

Oh Miss Admiral, we're still upset that you were feeling bad. Our mom bought Feliway a little before she brought Zoe home. We cannot honestly say if it worked or not since we don't know if the Feliway chillaxed us or if we wouldn't have been aggressive or stressed without it.

Miss Admiral
Mom has used the Feliway and said she did not notice one bit of difference. We think that it must help some kitties and maybe if it was only in one specific area.
But we agrees with you -- no more flea stuff!

Dear Admiral!
We got no clue about " Feliway " but the recommendation from your doctor should be safe to try

Sweet Admiral, we are so happy to hear you're feeling better. I guess it takes time for the flea meds to leave your body. And we hope the Feliway works for you. xx Kassey and her Mom.

The Island Cats said...

Admiral,
This is the Island Cats' mom. Here's the thing about feliway...you got to use a lot of it for it to really work. One plugin probably won't make any difference unless it's in one room and you are in there all the time. I have the feliway plugins all over the house...a total of 6 in a 2500 sq ft house...3 on the first floor and 3 on the second, including one in the bedroom that Zoey spends most of her time in. Does all the feliway I'm using make a difference? Well, I think it does, but not enough. Zoey is still scared of Wally and Ernie. But I'm not going to stop using it. As far as the calming collars, I know some people have had good success with them. I tried one on Zoey and she chewed it off. Haha!! FYI, the animal behaviorist that we see (who is a vet) told me that she did not see any success with the collars.

Personally, and this is just me talking, if you were feeling okay before getting the flea medication and then after you got it, you felt bad, then I would think it was the flea medication that made you feel bad. But then again, that's just my opinion.

I'm glad you're feeling better now.

Admiral, this is Ernie...our mom sure is mouthy, isn't she?? ;-)

Rumblemum and dad used the diffuser when they brought me in as a kitten, and when we lost Inigo. I think it's helped a lot (or at least as much as it can in the case of the latter)

I use Frontline for fleas but don't do it every month like they say as I don't think they need it that often. Feliway I've tried, but can't say I thought it had any effect...

Thank you for your kind words re Fluffy... I think she only has a little time left now, poor sweet thing... We are so sad...

Our Mommy only uses flea meds on us when we have to go to the vet so we don't bring any of that stuff home from the vet...She used Feliway when she brought Sukki into our home and again in the garage when we moved into the new house for Daddy Cat and Mommy Cat=we've all survived, don't know if it's helped, but didn't seem to hurt anything either...We are glad your vet blood tests were good and hope you have a restful weekend with your Mommy now that you are feeling better, beautiful girl...We love you Admiral, our sweet, lovely friend...kisses...Calle, Halle, Sukki

We have had the Feliway diffuser and it did not help. Mom thinks maybe because of the very high ceiling in the big room it did not work.
We have the spray, and it does help, but find it too expensive to get any more.

What has been the best was the Good Behavior Calming Collar. We got it at Amazon for about $12.00, it supposed to last a month. Malachi wears it, and it has helped him stop chasing me!

Hope your Mom can get some good sleep. We get a lot of that here, but with seven or eight of us on the bed with our Mom, she does not sleep well.

Happy Weekend!

Oh Admiral! I am gone for a few days and just LOOK what happens! Sure, I think it might've been the flea medicine and stuff, but it also might be that you wuz missin' your giant dose of SPITTY-LOVE! Well, here I am, Admiral! Now, don't you feel better???

And thanks for your purrs for Aggie and Wally's Dad--he's lots better!

Tamago said...

Oh I am so sorry that you had a bad reaction to the flea medicine. I've never used Feliway so I don't know how effective it is. But I heard that it works for some kitties but not for others..as commented above. Hopefully once the medicine is out of your system, you feel better...Your mom must be so worried about you.
Sounds like you are feeling better as time passes...I hope you continue to feel better and be fully well soon.
